happy holidays

Having been around this end of the web-o-sphere for over four years now, I realise it was always inevitable that Another Night On Earth would develop and grow in fairly unpredictable ways; I for one could not have predicted the guests who would agree to participate in our Press Play series so far (more well known, obscure and yet to be discovered heads have already signed up too), much the same as I could not have predicted the various rises and declines in the number of readers of these here pages. This last year has seen me posting less music up in general and certainly fewer tracks for downloading, but I'm also sure, in my mind at least, that the quality of sounds has been pretty high. Another Night is always going to be about new tunes as much as it will be about classics and dusty grooves of various kinds and genres; I'm not a purist and have long felt that mixing it all up is the most fun. So here's wishing ya'll happy holidays, I hope santa brings you at least a few records on your want lists and I hope you are around those you love... xx

mann made

With the year almost over and a flat out onslaught of new tunes from big names and prolific sources arriving each day, you'll have to be keen eared and sparkly bright in order not to miss out on spotting essential releases from lesser known individuals and newly formed labels. Audio Parallax Records wont be lesser known for very long mind you, and with the heavy salvo of top class releases they have coming up, they wont be very hard to pick out in a crowd either. You may have already noticed that I added their logo to the label links on the sidebar a few weeks back, I'm hoping you've already visited their pages. They have a fresh vision and a pioneering approach to putting out new sounds. If you've not already done so, please go check out their great content and tune into their regular podcasts, do it here!

Anyway Audio Parrallax have their first release coming up shortly (14th of Jan), a digital ep from Mannmademusic; a man who's already created quiet a name for himself on Soundcloud where he has over 1000 followers. Iain Mann takes his inspiration from KDJ and MoodyManc amongst others; there is that distinctive Disco loop love and a genuine underground feelin' to his sounds. 'Deep Soul', the opening track on the ep is 'Deep Burnt' re-invented for slo mo Disco groovers, it's familiar inspirational vocal samples and segments expand the tracks already deep and wide spaces into an epic and heady brew of blissed out sunset shuffling. NY head Matthew Kyle aka MK's remix of the tune follows; he re-treads the beat, re-slices the diced vocals and further stretches the idea into a horizontal, bump 'n grind, mood setter. Lastly you'll find another track of Mannmademusic's called 'Sounds Of Old', a similar choppy, string filled builder with subtle changes and languid Disco rhythms. Nothing on the ep is overly complex, the tracks build and flow like a fine double thick, they're hypnotic, melancholic and simultaneously deeply uplifting. Check the tracks below and get Audio Parrallax on your radar...

it is getting better

Ok here's another one of those dusty gems which needed airing up in here... Awhile back (June 09), I put up a track by German band Atlantis called 'Friends'. The track was from their live album. I knew very little about the band back then, in fact I only heard 'Friends' because of a recommendation made to me by the very talented & knowledgeable Frank de Kova aka Jupiter Tuning Center. Well... further investigation was required, though one doesn't have to dig very far to find quiet a few gems by the marvelous Inga Rumpf and her cohorts. Apparently I need to check out Inga's solo work too, but her bands first two LP's are worth picking up. Check out, for example, the title track from their 1973 album 'It's Getting Better'... instant beard classic!

blak's back

I need to give you a heads up about the new Blakula ep which sees them handing over 5 new 'Library' version of some of the tracks from their truly brilliant, recent LP. 'Permanent Midnight (The Library Versions Vol 1)' is exactly as the promotional copy states, 'perfect for setting the scene for any bitter and desperate ride through the alienated landscapes of a city’s darkness', these versions are more like interludes or sound scapes where the original song structures are almost entirely obliterated by spooked out Kraut/Psyche adventures in aural voodoo. Only 'Miss Morgue' retains some of the original versions groove, though here the tempo is stretched out into a lush slo mo groover. 'Vampire State Building' is the longest outing of the lot, and as it's the 'White Light/ White Heat/ White Noise' version, one can easily imagine the vampire going head to head with John Cale and his velvety cronies. Very far out and not a dj friendly track in sight... seriously fine!!!

Blakula - Miss Morgue (Deep Red Version)

Oh... I also need to let you know about a delicious Sergio Rizzolo edit of 'Miss Morgue' which is up on Soundcloud for your down loading needs. Sergio, an old a.n.o.e. friend and a man with some very fine edits of more obscure finds, felt (as i do) that the original just isn't long enough. Hence the edit...

polish love

Zielona Gora resident Old Spice reworks two gems from Polish Synth Pop/ Prog Rock outfit Kombi for The Very Polish Cuts first 'Polish Edits Ep'. I cant say I know the originals (though I've read a little about Kombi) but I can say both tracks are dynamite obscure Disco diamonds. The Very Polish Cuts is a project which was started by dj, producer, digger and blogger Zambon & his buddy Pnk Discorporation, in order to expose lesser known Polish cuts from the 70's & 80's. Get on Soundcloud and follow these guys at once, plus you get to download the first ep in a matter of minutes.. unmissable.. (if the downloads run out and you're keen, I'll put up one of the tracks - let me know)

jumbo saturday

Jumbo aka Jumbo '76 aka Jumbo '75 released their album 'Turn On To Love' in 1976 on a variety of labels, or perhaps they were picked up by different labels for different territories. Either way you'll find it on Prelude or Barclay or RCA Victor or a couple of other more obscure Euro labels. The album I have is actually called 'Sexy Lady', after the single which features on the record. I like most of this LP, but for some reason or other I really love a track called 'Saturday'; it may be quiet kitsch, it may even be a bit Pop, it's catchy too, but it also has a sweet soulful hook, strangely embedded vocals and a breezy groove. It's Saturday so 'Saturday' it is...

bionic

Before I continue with the fresh stuff, I think it's time to check out some dusty gems. I've been sitting on a few things which should be on a.n.o.e. and now is as good a time as any to get 'em up. First off is the flip side of 'Lady Angie', the Andy Nelson track which I wrote about back in July (see here if you like). 'Bionic Eyes', which a reader named Lazlo rightly points out in the comments of the aforementioned post, is heavily plugged by Dâm Funk, it's almost made specifically for him. The track is a breezy Boogie evergreen from 1982, it's plush keyboards are sublime, the vocals aren't super slick, which only adds to the airy feel of this gem. For those of you who dont yet know this track, I suspect it will be joining your ever growing list of favourites.

choice weapons

If you've spend a bit of time on the deep side of Soundcloud you will have heard more than a few tracks by Deep Space Orchestra, a duo who've built a solid reputation for cracking a new chasm of forward thinking open on Deep House floors. Soundcloud is one thing, but the duo have a bunch of vinyl releases coming up which are going to change things for them, well I reckon so anyway. Actually you'll find more illustrious playas like Kirk Degiorgio, Michael Rutten, Scott Grooves & Floating Points amongst those already spinning the good good stuff DSO have cooked up for their debut ep on their own imprint Weapons Of Choice. Chris Barker & Si Murray know their onions; classic Deep House & Techno inform their productions, but they innovate with deeply meshed intergalactic synths and great spiraling clouds of sliced melody and sound matter.  I'd venture to say that I haven't been this into a House act since the days of Schmoov or Digs & Woosh or Nail or Essa. Learn more about the duo here.

Winding Road, Home Taping, Tracky Bottoms, Foto and ART have also put money behind up coming releases from DSO, so keep your eyes fixed on new release pages for those and check out my favourite from their 'Trust Skynet' EP...spend money here. Did I mention there's a Revenge remix on the 12" too...
