Marcos Cabral mix

Runaway's Marcos Cabral recently posted a lovely smudgy, keys heavy, deep house soundtrack for summer in the big apple up on soundcloud, it's all hot hot heat for clinging t's and steamy daydreaming, and is certainly worth a look in (you can download it or stream the beast below). Check out the track list, tune in and enjoy this ride through some classics, some lesser known goodies and a bunch of quality underground sounds. You can also use the new On The Prowl pic link on the sidebar to keep up to date with Runaway's superb 'all bombs' label releases. Deep burnt beats!

c'est une bombe

While we're doing French Boogie, another recent discovery is the super sound of Mickey Milan. Boogie Times Records, the excellent rarities store and re-issue label, have done a very nice repack of Mickey's 1982 'C'est une Bombe' album which they put out on CD recently. Salsoul had picked up 'Quand Tu Danses (Y'A Tout Qui Bouge, Qui Balance !...)' from the album back in '82 for a 12" release which gives you an idea of the kind of quality we're talking about. There doesn't seem to be much info at all on the man himself around, but according to Discogs he quit recording around 1985. The re-issue contains some remixes which are ok, but nothing quiet touches the original 'C'est une Bombe' title track for heaps of probably kitsch French flair. Check it and stop by Boogie Times for some great digging...

Lady Angie

Plotting the course of an unusual diggers delight and it's (re) rise to cult status is certainly easier these days, what with the worldwide wonder web. For example when RA's Dave Stenton played Dan Tyler and Conrad McDonnell (aka The Idjut Boys) Andy Nelson's 'Lady Angie' for an interview with them some time last year, the track peaked the interest of The Idjuts along with thousands of readers. I certainly wanted to hear it, especially as the Dub Disco fiends expressed some joy when hearing it. So from a friend of Dave's who had pointed out the 1982 Carrere single to him, to Ra's audience, this track has rightly been re-ignited, it followed with some press on a few blogs too. The track has a very similar chord progression to The Alan Parsons Project's 'Voyager' but with a bunch of other 'big ideas' sown in and it turns out to be a JP Massiera production too, which would account for it's quality, the mixed up vibe and the super crazy price tag for the original 12". Kinda sorta French Boogie on a Sunday... long may it continue to rise...

Jonathan Kusuma

Jakarta's Space.Rec have done it again! Their latest release from Jonathan Kusuma in the form of an EP entitled 'Misi' is simply superb and quiet easily my favourite release of recent months. Kusuma satisfies a whole range of musical interests by combining Punk Funk, Balearic, Nu Disco, Dub, Psyche, Electronica and much much more into three free-form, mainly instrumental, twisted and beautiful sonic landscapes; two of which could be useful for very left field dance floors. It's the third track 'Waiting Games' which is really doing it for me though; this down tempo, bumpy hybrid meander is lush with detail, mad bleeps, Spanish and Western guitars, off kilter synths and amazing textures. Check it and hunt out the rest of the ep here or here or here. Talent!

drrax

Ooops! A whole week slides by and naught for you lot. I have lots of goodies for you so lets rectify that...  I recently got send this very delicious Dubby Deep House'ish remix from Drrax, a Polish dj/ producer duo with a taste for the good groove. The original is by the also Polish, dark space, Pop band The Loveliers (which can be heard here), Draxx have transformed it into an evolving, deeply infectious and underground feelin' bruiser. Find out more about them here and check the track. Dub House on a Monday then...

helvete

Sticking with things Swedish, Name In Lights' new EP is just recently available on Sweden's lovely Feed Records. Feed are responsible for Kool Dj Dust's excellent 'Ancient Astronauts' release from a little while back, which by the way you can now download for free off their website (same with their first release). The 'Eld & Lågor' EP from NIL has four lush and deep Balearo Disco Cosmo House type instrumental swingers on it, each is an intricate, building, synth heavy & proggish affair, designed for different moments of the night. 'Ginnungagap', a 3am dark tunnel ride, will appeal to those after peak hour moments, but 'Helvete' is the early doors, even Balearic item that's getting lots of rotation around these parts. Thanks to the label you get a download of the track. Go check out Feed's site where you can check out the rest of the EP and also find links to that top class KDD mix and one also from Name In Lights...

come closer

Swedish songbird Doris (Svensson) released an album in 1970 called 'Did You Give The World Some Love Today?', the Gothenburg blonde's silky tones cover a range of sounds from Jazz to Folk to Rock, but "You Never Come Closer' is the ideal follow on item to the psyche Pawnshop track below. The album was re-issued on CD in the 90's and the vinyl pops up on the net occasionally. A sunday night soft psyche gem for you then...

telegraph is calling...

Sometimes I think this site gets a little too self referential, I guess it could be annoying to some, but you see there are all these idea threads I begin that lead into other idea threads and artists and labels nearly always return, hence I am constantly referring to older posts and discoveries... the rabbit holes go very deep. Anyway that said, sometime in March I posted up 'My Shade' the flip side to The Pawnshops very hard to find 'The Telegraph is Calling' 7" (which for some reason i called 'The Telegram is Calling'), a few readers asked if they could hear the A side. Here it is then, a highly sought after Psyche sitar trip from 1971.... (btw there is a second single worth hunting out too)

magic wand edits

Sometime in May last year, I managed to convince DJ Steef (aka Troublemakers aka Venus Attack Project) into allowing me to hand over a copy of his then recently finished and fantastic Black Sabbath edit on anoe, I had heard it originally in a Leftside Wobble mix. Occasionally a track goes up here which gets my divshare counters really spinning, 'Black Savates' was one of those. It popped up in mixes all over the place. Now for the first time it gets an official vinyl release on Is It Balearic Recordings?' new edits offshoot Magic Wand along with a couple of Coyote edits and one from Manchester's BE. Coyote put the beach sand into Paul Hardcastle's 'Delores', now the ultimate baked, ocean side drive, plus they hand in a dubbed up take on Randy Crawfords 'You Might Need Somebody' which is a little slice of magic for me, since the original is a long time guilty pleasure. Lastly BE hits up Richard Bear's 'Sunshine Hotel' with extra beats and cuts, it's the closest this ep gets to a clubby moment with a funk heavy, midtempo beauty that flips on a little deepest deep house magic in the last third, superb!! Check out the BE below, check here for the other three lovelies and invest in this island treasure trove... well I would.

j love #3

The last of the three Julian Love edits with love from the man himself, is a very friendly rework of Motown's Hi Inergy and their single 'Shoulda Gone Dancing'. By focusing in on the instrumental (and the 'breaks' versions i think) Julien's rework is all Soul 'n Disco with a touch of the Boogie as it moves on. Lovely, lovely stuff... Thank you Julien for popping in and sharing some class goodies. Keep in touch with the man over at Edits, Food & No Hype.

chicken lips remix competition...

DJ History are currently running a Chicken Lips remix competition. I meant to mention this earlier, but if you're interested you still have some time as submissions need to be in by 31st August. It's very simple; your submission needs to be in Wav format or a 320k Mp3, you need to mail it (or a link to it) to djhistory @ gmail . com (remove the spaces) with 'Chicken Lips Competition' in the subject header. Get the parts to their track 'Sweet Cow' here and get busy. The winner will have their track go up for sale on DJ History's ever evolving store, alongside other classic Chicken Lips goodies. Do it!

Press Play #38 - Mark E

Mark E really doesn't need any intro's, so I'm not going to say much more than his mix for a.n.o.e. is superb and that I'm beyond delighted to have him on the site. Way beyond delighted. Marc's new label Merc (the new home to all things M.E.) is fast becoming one of those buy on sight imprints, go check out 'Special FX/Christo' his latest, for proof. Lastly here is how Mark himself describes this deeeeep journey...

"A rough sunny lazy afternoon journey through new / old records, promos and new remixes loosely merged to the back drop of the world cup vuvuzela. From slo-mo balearic mooders, RnB shakers, detroit deep bangers, to disco shufflers, french house phazers and deep house hottness, a pleasure to be asked to do the mix." ////// Mark E.

keep on keepin on...

The original 7" of Le Frank 'O's 'Keep On Gettin' Down' on M M-M Gold is almost impossible to find (It's another one that comes with a Part1 on the one side and Part 2 on the other), but thanks to BBE (on their 'Soul Spectrum' comp) and also Joey Negro & Sean P (on their 'The Soul Of Disco' double), you really don't have to go hunting too far to find it on superbly mastered vinyl. Think of all those great Soul Funk & Disco tracks with the vocal refrain 'get on down' in them... this one is better. Some of you may also recognise it as the source track for KRL's superb 'Recession Beat' edit out on Wolf Music last year. Mmmm gold!!
