Only the Beginning

A little while back, the boys at Dilated Choonz popped up a lovely edit of Chicago's 'Street Player' which the very sharp Kenny Dope sampled for his massive Bucketheads hit 'The Bomb'. I remembered i had an early Chicago Transit Authority album in my collection and pulled it out, only to discover a number of truly great tracks on it. Of course I'm surprised, Chicago of the 80's was indeed the most mawkish stuff i have ever heard. Then I discovered 'Beginnings' and was truly delighted as I realised I already know and love the track but from the version by Astrud Gilberto, which is very pretty. Here on the original, penned by Robert Lamm, the track comes into its full free Soul glory. In fact I'm amazed that from getting it so right, this bunch of obviously talented guys could later on get it so wrong. 'Beginnings' was released in 1969 as part of their debut album, which includes 'Does Anybody Know What Time It Is', another fantastic and worthy find. Classic indeed!!
