does the dust settle?

OK moving on, here's something I've been wanting to share with you for quiet some time. My interest in the track comes via hearing the Diaphanoids remix of 'As The Dust Settles' by a London based experimental band called Snorkel. I love the Diaphanoids deep space tripathons, their releases on Bear Funk, especially the recent one, are great. First thing I did was check out the remix, which I dug (very slo mo, cosmo), then i listened to the original which I really connected with...

So a little research reveals Snorkel are well experimental; you've got a heady mix of afro, kraut, dub and jazz in there as well as a fair bit of electronica, they're very moody, kinda dark but extremely accomplished and have great beats too. With a crew that includes a founding member of Pest (Ninja Tune) and man of many instruments Charles Stuart, it's pretty clear that Snorkel aren't going to be your basically un-listenable obscurist art babble type stuff, they're the
obscurist art babble type stuff you can listen to, even enjoy. They cite Can, Eno & Soft Machine amongst their very varied influences (surely when they say 'Kajagoogoo' is an influence it's a red herring?). Check out their Myspace for more well wobbly, deep and far out loops.

I realise this isn't going to be everyone's cup of groovin Disco, it is however excellent, file this under 'when song titles express the desire and fears of a nation'...

Hi Chris,

Thank you for sharing just a fabulous piece of music. Amazing how the 'Soul of Arthur Russell' shows up in so many recent tracks; on second thought, maybe it isn't amazing, since we've seen so many comps and represses of his work.

I hear all the other influences that Snorkel cites, but I still hear that unique "dancing & tromping through your own echo" sensation that appears in Arthur Russell's music. Great post, thanks again,

Peace, Jerome

Yo Chris!

I checked out Snorkel's space; they ARE real. I didn't realize all the membership fluctuations. Tracks are excellent. When I listen to them I get the sense they are not afraid to really push the sounds, to explore. Thanks again.

Peace, Jerome
