heavy heavy

Two classic Pop Rock's get a heavy Dub 'n Disco make over on one very limited edition 12" for Heavy Disco Edits, which you'll find in stores this week. If the name Heavy Disco rings a cowbell, it may well have something to do with the fact that these monster edit's are rumoured to belong to Ashley Beedle. Ashley has used the 'Heavy Disco' moniker before, usually for personal reworks from his private collection and there is much sonic evidence too, that the tracks originate from his studios. These 'mysterious' and Dub heavy twin peaks were apparently sourced in Japan however, where they were destined to remain a local only release, now you or I can grab a copy. What you get is David Essex's ubiquitous 'Rock On' re-jigged for far out dancefloors and the pretty massive 'Come Together' by them Beatles dubbed to within an inch of its former life. It's Beedle's take on the Fab 4's call to unity that makes this 12" one to covet, like any classic Beedle production this beauty is the cream that causes multiple orgasms... well aural ones anyway. If you think I'm joking, I suggest listening to it below...

Press Play #37 - Coyote

There are a couple of really excellent Coyote mixes doing the rounds at the minute and here's one more, done recently for a.n.o.e. which does exactly what it says on the box; 'Balearic Dancefloor' blends together a bunch of eclectic 'mellow in the head' beach floor tunes for sunset shuffling. Coyote kick off with that excellent Dutch tune from Get A Room (you'll remember they gave you a copy of it right here) and continues along with delicious sun kissed finds, blissed out grooves, Latin Boogie, a Disco classic or two, some dubbed up electronica and at least one killer Edit (just how we like it). Simply marvelous I tell ya.

As you already know, Coyote released their debut album 'Harlyn Bay' last year which ranked amongst the best of '09 for many a good soul, they've also more recently put out a string of new releases on their superb Is It Balearic? Recordings (check here) and are bringing you that wonderful DJ Steef Black Sabbath edit, along with a couple of other edity beauties on vinyl pretty soon. Keep up with them over at Coyote Howl.

Once again it's an absolute pleasure to be able to bring you this super mix. I should warn you there are a couple more Press Play's waiting in the wings including one from Mark E (which I'll attempt to get out in the new week).

j love #2

Here's the second Julien Love edit you're getting from the Oz dj. Actually i really dig this version; Telex's 'Moskow Disko' has been a long time favourite that never leaves my record bag. There was another edit of this monster Electro bomb out a few years back, which i think was Canadian and is also hot heat. Julien takes it further though, adding extra punch, tweaks and some 808 body poppin' action, without removing the originals retro flavour. Super! Thank you Julien!

we love jpm

Jean Pierre Massiere has in recent times become more and more collectible, there have been a few very good compilations released, which makes things more accessible for those cheap or poor bastards out there, but if you're after any of the slightly harder to find original lp's then make an appointment with your kindest bank manager. Massiere's twisted Funked out take on things Cosmic, Disco, Pop and more ensures that his music is always very interesting and often not like anything else around (now and then).

Hitting the stores tomorrow is a very nice collection of JPM edits by Bonar Bradberry, PBR Streetgang and Softrocks called 'The Unreleased' which by the way comes with an excellent bespoke hand drawn illustration by Mikey Brain (see image) on the center label. The release is super delicious and one of the finer sets of edits out at the moment. It was due to come out last year but it got buried under record label red tape. Now it's found a new route to your ears and hopefully your collection. Softrocks take on 'Sunday Morning Fever' in a manner not all that dissimilar to the Ray Mang version which we gave away awhile back, except they've left more of the original vocals in which is excellent, plus this is the closest most of us will get to having this brilliant track on vinyl. PBR do a little homage to JPM using the vocal and sounds only original 'Onomatopaeia' on top of some Streetgang magic, as well as re-working the funk heavy 'Toi Qui Baisiers'. It's all good, but it's Bonar's club ready re-wire of 'Space Woman' which takes the prize for utilizing JPM's original in a modern dubbed out manner. Check it below, check the other tracks here, and see you on the wonky dancefloor.

rack'em exhalt/underground ///

Danny Red Rack'em has been putting out a steady flow of top class releases for some time now; you already know he's been championed by Gilles Peterson, Carl Craig, Greg Wilson and a host of other luminaries who's musical interests cross the same deep and wide range that Danny's releases do. If you don't know him already, do a quick search of anoe above to find interviews, reviews and mixes galore.

Rackem's latest release on ///Shift Music has already gotten support from a bunch of good people like Jazzanova, Ewan Pearson, Laurent Garnier, Richard Sen, Still Going, & Jacques Renault of Runaway fame and for good reason too. 'Exhalt' on the b-side is probably the one I like the most, with it's exquisite deep space, inner vision; like a lot of Danny's House productions there is a definite nod to the best of Detroit's electronic pioneers, but his agility and unique approach create a very individual, even fresh result. I've said it before, Danny makes really deep records; both sides of the ///Shift release explore known territories, but their soulful depth makes them unusual and very desirable. Give 'Exhalt' below a listen and see if you concur...

As is almost always the case with this pirate, there is a bunch of releases upcoming (including albums for his Marlinspike and Hot Coins projects and also an 'early years' Red Rack'em CD), but perhaps the most important will be his first release (out some time in September), for his own label Bergerac. I for one am very keen to hear what he comes up with for this House based platform. Check here or here to keep up...

Rack'em is pretty media savvy and knows you'd love a download with all that reading, so he's giving you a 320k of one of his previously released Hot Coins Disco Edits. Grab his excellent re-fix of Lakeside's 'Fantastic Voyage' and look sharp as there may be another freebie edit of distinction to follow soon...

keepin' it to myself

I had seen the eponymous 1977 Soul Disco album on Jet Set by Jaisun in a few places on the internet, selling for not too much money; i'm not sure if there's a bootleg because in fact prices vary. I had also read that it's super rare and something of a classic. I toyed with getting one for some time (this happens a lot), but as if by magic a copy has found it's own way to me. It's a lovely album; Jaisun's vocals are golden, the production by William Stevenson is superb and full of deep touches and fine detail. There's some Disco and some Soul and at least one huge Horse Meat Disco type banger called 'You're All I Need To Get By'. Jaisun has gone on to write books, direct and does a lot of voice over work, but this album is her biggest achievement in the Music Industry; it was apparently created just after a tour she was on with Martha Reeves (and the Vandellas). It's a beautiful achievement and grows on one with each listen. Check out the very lovely 'Keepin' It To Myself' and grab a copy if you come across one...

j love #1

Thanks to Julien Love aka Kebabiman, the Oz based proprietor of things over at 'Edits, Food & No Hype', also the man behind a number of sought after quirky, cool and obscure edits, including the very excellent 'Real Good Time' out on Blackdisco back in 2009, you're getting a few exclusives for your own ever increasing collection. And collect these you must! This ex South African knows his onions and has made a solid reputation for dabbling in the dark diggers art of the obscure re-hash, but with these lively re-cuts he's gone for better known material. You're getting them in the order I got them; Boney M's 'Felicidad' get's a fresh make over for good times and dancing. Julien's 'no hype' manifesto demands that I leave the ululating to you. Check it!

need your love

Tokyo based label of distinction Jansen Jardin will be releasing their 4th 12" (this time internationally) this July; 'Need Your Love' is the type of track that will remind you of the best of times dancing to underground House music; it's a classic, warm, early morning, smoke machine, lovedup moment. Written and produced for Yuki Suzuki by Max Essa, 'Love' is nostalgia refreshed, it's the original House sound re-bumped for an increasingly blinkered scene; with Max's inimitable guitar funk, lush production, Yuki's sweet vocals and some almighty pads, this 12" is unmissable. Well that's for starters, flip to the b-side for an irrepressible, dubbed out remix from Lee Douglas; the TBD, Rong & Stallions man has delivered pure gold; I'm not even going to describe it. Check it below and get this record!!!

yes maam

Like much of Bearfunk's recent output, Visti & Meylands eponymous album for the label, isn't easily classifiable. In fact it's eclectic quirkiness is very much the result of these two minds coming together and spending a great deal of time brewing their particular & leftfield point of view. From Proto House to Haunted Biker Disco, from sleazy mid-tempo synth creepers to Balearic Pop, this album is once again (like the recent Robert Auser album) very much an artists vision; it's very strong on personality. Some of the tracks push the cheesy boat out a little far for my ears, but there is also much mastery behind their madness; their beautiful and funky productions leave one feeling stretched across a range of carefully elicited emotions, but loving it all the while. There's an excellent cover of Grace Jones' 'Nightclubbing' and much fiddling with 'the dub' elsewhere on the album, there is also a great deal of real instrumentation and classy hook laden song writing. Most of all there is a very Euro feel to this release, I imagine if I were to find this years from now in a dusty crate it would make my month, but of course it couldn't be more bang on time. The lead single 'Stars' is still the standout track; it's an epic, ever evolving, Psyche Disco anthem with horns on. Go find a copy to check out and in the meantime check out my other favourite on the record, the southern fried 'Yes Maam (All Nite)'... Brilliant!

upsuedown

Things have been a bit slow around here lately, you'll understand i have been crazy busy at work. That said, I have a bunch of good things lined up for you and only need to add that if you haven't downloaded the Stupid Human Press Play yet, then get on it, it's right up there with the best of them. The other thing I need to mention is some of the older Press Plays have somehow become unhinged over time, so I have been slowly repairing that; Juju & Jordash's excellent head trip is back up, as is Cosmic Boogie's excellent mix for the series. Brubekk's mix is still missing, however I'll get that up shortly and if you spot any others with links that don't work, let me know. OK on to the music...

Although I was slow in getting to In Flagranti, by the time they started their Sounds Superb series I was sold. Their cut ups of a variety of known and hard to find gems are, well... superb! There is a deliberate roughness and edgy mash up energy to many of their tracks, they're also often quiet short and feel, as a result, slightly throwaway. Working under a thousand pseudonyms Flagranti have quickly mastered their leftfield sonic art attack, but not more so than on their bumping, pitch shifting, re-boil of 'Upside Down'. Last seen and heard on Sounds Superb Volume 6 on their very excellent Codek Records. Have played this into the ground... and it still keeps bouncing back.

Press Play #36 - Stupid Human

Stupid Human's second 12" on his own Stupid Human label is filtering into numerous record stores as we speak. Check Piccadilly, check Juno or get it direct from here. As with his previous 12" there are only 500 of these going out into the world; the thing is you really need this, you really really need this. The brilliant 'Ah You're Welcome', an exceptionally slick and bumpy rework of Vicky Anderson's 'Stop On By' is worth the asking price alone, but there is also 'Far Out Gypsy', a beardy monster which kills it on the floor, plus the excellent 'A Straight Head' refresh. Stupid Human's first 12" is already fetching around 25 quid on Discogs, so you know what I'm saying...

I'm very excited to hand over the Human's 'Erotic Transference' mix, recently done for a.n.o.e's  Press Play series; it's already one of my favourites in the series, with it's careful fusion of crisp leftfield dance moments and superb dusty grooves. It ends with a recent remix from SH too. Like the 12", you really need this. Huge thanks go to the London based Human for the very lovely trip, check the track list, now download...

then there were the blues...

There are a bunch of excellent Press Play mixes on their way, first up this week is one from Stupid Human (which I should have up in the next few days), followed by Lusty Zanzibar and Coyote's lovely offerings. In the meantime, however, here's the last (in a series of 3) of the tracks from Oz based producer & DJ, Andras Fox. Fox has a really good ear for unearthing worthy sampling or editing material, I know he's a real digger and that he explores across a range of sounds. 'Then there was the Blues', pinches heavily from a Crusaders track, Fox bumps it up for modern left field Jazz feet and underground house heads. It's not overly complicated, but it works really well out on the floor... Keep your eyes on this one...
