Rodney Franklin recorded his first album at the age of nineteen, after being formally trained as a pianist from the age of four. His style is difficult to classify due to his interests in both traditional and newer styles of jazz simultaneously. I found three of his records recently and they're all really good once you get into them. I mentioned Franklin to a guy that buys records from us for his shebeen in Johannesburg and his immediate reaction was: Oh yes, Rodney Franklin! I should pay more attention to people who other people don't pay attention too, I reckon.
