walk in the night

Friend and fellow music enthusiast of note, Finn Cambell Notman aka Finness aka one half of The Groovers recently send me an edit he'd commissioned from Ed Samuel (so he could spin it at his Birthday no less). Finn tells me Ed has done some rather good edits in the past, plus they're old friends, so Mr Notman took the opportunity to ask Mr Samuel for a lil' rework of Junior Walker and the All Stars' Disco Funk track 'Walk In The Night'. Finn got the original record when he was just 13 and it's clearly an old favourite. I don't know the original, but i can say the Ed Samuel edit is excellent, plus due to the kindness of Mr Notman I get to hand it over to you... Happy Birthday Finn and thanks for the lovely edit (you too Ed)... More music for life!! Off to find a copy of the original.. hot tune!!

the pastor moves me

I've invested in a couple of records from Light In The Attic over the years, their releases always strike me as very well researched and done with enormous care. I recently got a lovely vinyl pack of their 'Pastor T.L. Barrett and the Youth For Christ Choir Sings', which comes with an extra 7", loads of info and a L.I.T.A. Zine. It is one of the finest records I have bought for some time. A first listen to the title track of the LP 'Like A Ship... (Without A Sail)' was something not unlike my first listen to 'For Real' by Harry Flowers (the first Sad Ghost record), I was and still am very much in awe of the track's ability to reach into the very depths of my soul and move one almost to tears. It's the kind of feeling all diggers look for I'm sure, when the music communicates beyond your expectations, beyond your knowledge. I'm not a man who buys very many Gospel records, perhaps because I know so little about where to start, but if you're looking for something very funky, something deeply soulful and spiritually uplifting... this is it, the whole album is beautiful! Music for Life...

press play #40 - lusty zanzibar

Easily one of my favourite sets in recent times, Lusty Zanzibar's Press Play mix 'Z'bar Helium Invert' brings the series to it's 40th episode. Sir Lusty has handed in a classy journey through the best of House, Balearic and Disco. You'll know some of the tracks well, but Lusty's electric blends and fine selection make this a pretty essential party tape.

Alex Cordiner aka Lusty Zanzibar has his debut album coming up on Nang in the next months, it's a record I am very keen to hear; ever since I got hold of the Zanzibar's first ep on Bear Funk, i've been a big fan. His remix of 'Pionir' for Ichisan & Nakova merely compounded the obsession. I hear Alex holds down a residency at a monthly night in New Cross, London, which, if this mix is anything to go buy, must surely be one to check out. Once again, I feel blessed to be able to bring you another excellent mix from one of my favourite artists...

midnight gold

Ambassador's Reception put out the very excellent 'Disco Diva Delights Vol 1.' CD Compilation last year; it was, I thought, one of the finer compilations of the year. While the collection's title suggests no more than your average collection of commonplace diva action, it is in fact a diggers trove of some very expensive and relatively hard to find Disco gems. Tracks from Hot Sauce, Black Hole and Satin & Green are worth the asking price alone. One of my current favourites has to be Top Secret's 'Dancing To Midnight', a brilliant Pat Desario production which, on vinyl, will set you back a few dollars. Why are my favourite records always so damned expensive ? In an attempt to put some real Disco back into the mix here on anoe, here's the Top Secret track... top dollar!

wolf at the door again!

Graham Greymatter & Wolf Music Recordings have handed over a sizzling mix of underground party tracks, in order to promote their latest 12" (read this or go here if you don't already know about this very fine release). Graham pulls no punches with his live n' direct mixin' skills (no ableton here folks), his selection skills are also very much on top form and includes a bunch of post Moodyman, future dancing tunes. It's no secret I'm a fan of both the label and Graham's, these guys are working hard to bring you fresh sounds and new directions for current Disco n' Deep House scenes. My what very big teeth ...

Gold

Humberto Matias aka Social Disco Club's lovely Hands Of Time Gold label recently signed 4 new Dimitri From Paris edit's under his Dimitri From Tokyo alias, their eta in stores is the 1st of November. Dimitri seems ever present in Disco scenes around the planet and has been for many years; his distinctive French sound perfectly matched the rise of the Idjut Boys and Faze Action back in the mid 90's, the same as it has again, with the rise of Todd Terje and a whole host of Disco editing royalty, in more recent years. Simultaneously Pop and Dubby, Dimitri's music is always friendly, always fun and always deep, there's also that bubbling French flair (i know talk about stereotyping) with a little cheeky groove 'to go' on top. I recently played his Hands Of Time Gold version of 'Midas Touch' by Midnight Star from the EP; re-named here as 'Eberything I Touch Tulns To Gord', the track caused a mild panic on the dance floor, beautiful scenes! The whole EP is golden, 'Gord' and 'I Rob to Dance', it's highlights, will be getting lots of love from me. Check the soundcloud clips and book your copy.

night people

Bruton Library records are often full of delightful and innovative antique sounds of various kinds. I've been lucky enough to find a fair few volumes in a couple of very dusty corners, in some of Johannesburg's better digging spots. There are usually one or two stand out tracks on each of the volumes, while the remaining tracks offer a fair bit of sampling potential (if that's your thing). One of my favourite tracks from their 1978, 'Spread Your Wings' collection is Richard Hill's 'Night People', a delicious Disco Funk gem which is criminally short. Check it...

alpha glory

Work has been stealing all my time, but if you're a long time reader, then you already know this happens every year around this time. I do, however have a bunch of goodies for those of you who keep coming back...

Matlock residents, Winding Road Record stars and Deep House dons Rhythm Plate, recently dropped me a mail with news of their excellent Disco Reggae re-edit of an Alpha Blondy beast called 'Jah Glory'. Matt & Ant are giving this first class edit away on Soundcloud. I reckon I'll be playing this one out for a long while to come... Essential!!
