Marius Våreid Maxi Discso Miks 2009

Firstly, apologies for slipping off the radar there, all the downloads will be back up and running shortly. I need a small team of people to handle all the upcoming bits I have to hand over, so I've decided to get on with it in the interim.

In order to promote their debut 12" release, hot new 'Tropical House' label Maxi Discs got
Marius Våreid to do a mix for them which is now being exclusively housed here at a.n.o.e. for your downloading pleasure. The 12" by Marius is called 'Disco Drummer'; it comes with top dollar versions from Pete Herbert & Dicky Trisco, it's being played out by all the good guys (Faze Action, Unabombers, Mark E, Phoreski, etc) and it's available in all good record stores now. My vote goes to the original version by Marius, you need it! Long time readers of a.n.o.e. may remember this post in which Mr Våreid handed over that very lovely 'Song For Sara', you should also be well aware of Ytre Rymden Dansskola, who's Full Pupp releases are the product of Marius and his buddy Jarle Brathen.

The mix is fantastic, not too long and packed with classy Disco & Deep House goodies specially chosen for you. Thanks so much Marius & Barry for organizing this... Get it on the sidebar or here.

afrobutt

It's time to put on my ranting gown and tell you about Electric Minds' brand spankin new collection of edits by Afrobutt. Things I presume you already know about Afrobutt include that it's the moniker of Steve 'King Wobble Disco Fela Ransom' Kotey (who really needs no introduction), that he released a number of delicious, quirky and essential 12"s as Afrobutt on Noid, Big Bear & Hairy Claw in the early 2000's and that the project sees Steve dig deep into the world of Cosmic Afro Dub Disco. 'Wunderbutt' is magnificent, spectacular even and it's set to be released in the next week. Every one of the 13 tracks contained herein are going to get any Disco loving crowd into a bit of a frenzy; the grooves are for the most part deep, hypnotic, often raw, real deal Disco. Steve is incredibly versatile, he creates a whole range of dance music related styles with jaw dropping ease & a distinctive groove heavy approach, it's no different when bringing his microscope to this end of the spectrum; the album takes in a wide range of interests which connect mainly through his love of dubbing things into various states of existence (the key component, along with Disco that lies behind labels like Noid, Bear Funk etc). Right now I'm playing 'Cracks All Gone' over and over and over again; it's a slo mo, sparse, dubbed out slice of repetition that's wrecking my headset, it's by no means the best of the tracks though; the title track 'Wunderbutt' is going to be huge on underground floors, obliterating, as it does, most of the NuDisco competition (which should henceforth be known as 'ButtDisco'), 'Banger Disco' is that ultimate Nigerian Space Disco track you've been looking for but didn't know existed, 'Lucifer Went To Church' could be the brain child of the Moroder Cosmo Rock Ensemble (if such a thing were to exist), 'The Taste (Round & Brown)' is another jacking Kotey instant classic for left field dancers (is this the albums hit track??). Get on over to the Electric Minds myspace to check out more of the tracks and hear one of my many favorites right here ('Banger Disco')... Along with the recent Loud-E on Ambassadors Reception, 'Wunderbutt' is the must have item of the year so far... landmark!

the drum

Sundays are excellent for heading way off the beaten path, musically speaking or otherwise. Thus I decided to finally give the two Slapp Happy albums I own (more gems from my folks collection) a listen. I had no idea that Slapp Happy was a Dagmar Krause, Peter Blegvad project, but of course discovered this when investigating the covers and registered the Henry Cow collaboration on one of them. It's also well known that Faust were their backing band on the first two albums. It sets a particular tone when you know you're about to listen to the artful end of the music spectrum, a tone that's not always useful, if you know what I mean. Anyway to cut a long story short, 'The Drum' from their 1974 eponymous album for Virgin is sublime, twisted, psychedelic and at once dominated by the 'love em' or 'loathe em' distinctive vocals of Dagmar (later of Art Bears amongst other projects). It's oversubscribed with musical fascinations; Eastern sounds, Country, Folk, Roots, all in the one track and is a paean to the primal beat of the drum. Dagmar's lyrics are off the page, a portrait of the artist high on acid perhaps (?). It's definitely not Disco, it's 70's Avante Garde Pop for fans of Faust and the like. I recorded the track slowed down a little which really emphasised the underlying hypnotic and somewhat beard'ish groove of the track... Like i said way off the beaten path...

the final thing

German pop artist Erna Strub aka Joy Fleming did the 15 minutes of Disco brilliance that is 'The Final Thing' for her 1978 album 'I Only Wanna Get Up and Dance', the album was also released in the US, that same year, as 'The Final Thing'. It's an unrequited, bona-fide, non-ironic Disco should be hit. Unless of course it was a hit. I had not heard of it until, my good friend Coffee Garner recently send it to me amongst his top German made tracks of all time (I knew only one of the tracks he send me - I should post more of them). You might think it's over indulgent to carry a track on for that long, but that's Disco ain't it?! New to me and loving it... Someone already pointed out that Amplified Orchestra's 'Fun Thing' is an edit of this track. i have the AO track and didn't realize it was made from this genius item...

morning, noon & night

Probably the best track on Space Funk & Disco outfit Morning, Noon & Night's 1977, eponymous album, is this slice of blaxploitation funk with delicious spacey keys & guitars called 'Movin' On Down The Line'. It's a mellow drive-by classic made for night cruising in big cities. It's the only album the six piece group made, it's not too hard to find and is inexpensive (discogs have a few); there are some good tracks on it ('Song For You' is beautiful) and if u get the first issue, it's got a brilliant cover...

controllo totale

Here's a slice of super slo mo beardy Balearic biznez for your Monday mood. Italian Dj and editor Nassau has taken his blade to the rather obscure (outside Italy) Anna Oxa, Motels cover version 'Controllo Totale' (or 'Total Control'). Anna was 18 when she sang this, and was known for her strange 'Nina Hagen like' antics. It's kitsch, it's dramatic (is she almost crying at one point?) and for some weird reason I am just loving it... These days Anna is doing very well for herself and is a mainstream Pop icon in Italy. Nassau magic!

future five

Five20East have an upcoming vinyl release called 'Death On The Highway', it's the first part of a trilogy of 12" releases designed to showcase new material from their artists, this one features recent StillLove4Music artist Andy Ash, Deep Space Orchestra, Cronk Family Enterprises and Harri & The Revenge. Digital versions will become available at a later stage. The 12" is an exploration of that 'pitched down house' sound the label is well known for. There is also an upcoming 6th Borough Project release (also on vinyl) on Instruments of Rapture, which if it's anything like the last one, will be absolutely essential, as well as a forthcoming 'Forever in their Debt' set of edits. By the end of February all these bits will be available. Before i get on with tonights post, I must mention 'Death On The Highway' is top notch club gear and the Harri & The Revenge track 'Rocky Mountain Drifter' is an ace midtempo party monster. Keep up with the goings on over at Ooft and you can also look forward to an exclusive Press Play from the Revenge in the not too distant future...

Speaking of The Revenge, their last set of edits, released at the tail end of last year, for L.E.S.S. Productions called 'Taps Aff' contained what was probably one of my favorite edits of '08 (though u may argue it's a mash up). Part Sharon Redd, part Q-Tip, 'Breathe & Stop' is an inspired feel good, old skool feeling, block rocker. Still immense!! right here, right here, omg so deep...

do not attempt without protection

Prior to forming Telex (with Marc Moulin & Michel Moers), Dan Lacksman released some 7" singles under the name Dan Lacksman Association, the keyboard fanatic/ specialist also produced an album in 1977 as Electronic System called 'Disco Machine'. It's rare (well the original vinyl is, it did however get a full re-issue in 2004 on Musique Belgique Archive), it has quiet a few killer Moroderesque keyboard heavy numbers on it and is currently getting a lot of play round here. After Telex, Dan went on to produce Deep Forrest which of course is an entirely different thing. 'Cosmos Trip' is mind bending Disco...

just a quick heads up to say the full track list for the brilliant Main Stem mix is also up... check here.

Press Play #22 - Paul Williams

Paul Williams (aka Baleariksoul) is the first of the returning guests in the Press Play collection, he is also by no means the last. Late in June of 2007 Paul contributed the fourth mix to the then fledgling series, and a fine essential mix it was/is too. Since then Paul and his wife started 'A Party With No Name' ( a reference perhaps to Greg Wilson's 'Scene Without a Name' thread on DJH); a Cheltenham night for lovers of Disco, Balearic & other beardy types of tunes, they are currently looking for a new venue - for the minute then, it's 'A Party With No Name and No Home'. Paul continues to contribute to that classy operation Trackwerk, he's also a seller of fine gems on Discogs (go here to see what's currently in stock), it's possible this will be developed further into a site of it's own in the near future, and since he's currently a little less involved with the Beard Science crew, he'll be putting in time at the studio developing some sound output of his own. None of this matters at the moment because u have a truly superb and very adult mix of predominantly 80's 'Diskothèque' movers to download. It's a real beauty; 'Diskothèque' is a deep, late night, sweaty, street prowling, made for dancers & international Disco freaks affair, plus I have to say Paul's done the job without using much in the way of well known gems which is of course how we like it.. Simply unmissable! get it on the side bar or here.
